Overview
The most distinctive feature of Nuwara Eliya is its cool climate, earning it the reputation of being the coldest place in Sri Lanka. The town’s climate is influenced by its altitude and proximity to the Indian Ocean, resulting in average temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C throughout the year. This unique climate is perfect for growing vegetables and flowers, which has made the area famous for its lush gardens and tea plantations.
Nuwara Eliya is a hub for tea production in Sri Lanka. The town is surrounded by sprawling tea estates, and visitors can take guided tours to witness the tea-picking process and even sample some of the finest Ceylon tea. The picturesque landscapes with neatly manicured tea bushes, mist-covered hills, and charming colonial-era tea factories create a serene and captivating atmosphere.
Ella, on the other hand, is a small town located about 100 kilometers to the southeast of Nuwara Eliya. Perched at an altitude of around 1,041 meters above sea level, Ella offers a slightly different experience from its cooler neighbor.
Ella enjoys a more moderate climate compared to Nuwara Eliya. While it can still get chilly in the evenings, the town generally experiences milder temperatures, ranging from 15°C to 28°C. This climate is ideal for outdoor activities and exploration.
Ella is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, which includes lush green valleys, dense forests, waterfalls, and breathtaking viewpoints. One of the most famous viewpoints in Ella is Ella Rock, which provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the iconic Ella Gap.
Our sightseeing day will begin with an ascent to the Ambuluwawe Tower. Although this attraction does not have any historical or cultural significance, it is located in the middle of a biosphere reserve and attracts the attention of hundreds of tourists who want to tickle their nerves. An external spiral staircase leads to the top of the snow-white 48-meter tower, and a dizzying view opens up from a height. Next, we have a path to a high-mountainous city and the famous tea capital of the island, Nuwara Eliya. On the way, we will walk through the tea plantations, see the Devon and St. Clair waterfalls, and visit the tea museum. Overnight at the hotel in Nuwara Eliya.
After breakfast, we will arrive at Nanuoya Railway Station, board the train, and travel along part of one of the most beautiful railway routes in the world to Ella Railway Station. We will go to the highland town of Ella, where we will look at the famous nine-arch bridge, climb the small peak of Adam, and see the waterfall shrouded in ancient legends, Ravana. The excursion is suitable for lovers of nature, animals, and outdoor walks who are interested in culture, archeology, and religion.
