Overview
We have compiled this excursion for those who do not want to travel far from the coast during their holidays, and we invite you to take a boat ride on the Madu River. During this walk, you will see the lives of ordinary Sri Lankans living along the coast, their way of life, traditional crafts the process of catching shrimp and fish visit the island where the world-famous Ceylon cinnamon is grown, look into one of the Buddhist temples, see the animals and birds inhabiting this area, as well as thickets of mangrove trees.
Next, we will go to one of the many turtle farms on the coast, namely the oldest of them a farm in the resort of Kosgoda. This farm was opened in 1978. It employs employees who patrol the shore in search of turtle eggs and transfer them to the farm to save the population of sea turtles. In addition to newborn turtles, the farm contains adult turtles, which, due to circumstances, will not be able to support their livelihoods in the open ocean. Rare albino turtles also live on the farm.
Next, visit the moonstone deposit, where you will see the process of mining this noble stone.
The tour will end with a museum of traditional masks of a huge variety. There’s a showroom where you can buy the masks if you like, along with other artwork like sculptures and paintings. You can visit the workshop and see how the masks are made step by step. The museum gives a clear background story of how the folklore about the masks was born.
