Overview
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an institution that was established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation to help adult elephants and orphaned elephants left in difficult wildlife situations. This nursery is the largest breeding center for wild Asian elephants in the world. Here you can see how the inhabitants of the nursery are looked after, fed, and taken to the river for bathing.
If desired, the Pinnawala Nursery can be replaced by the Millennium Nursery. This is a small nursery where elephants are kept under the supervision of volunteers. Here you can take a short ride on an elephant, see a small museum dedicated to elephants, and take part in bathing and washing an elephant in the river.
Next, you will go to the garden of Ayurveda and spices, where they will show you and tell you in detail about the cultivation of useful plants used in traditional medicine and give you aromatic tea with spices.
You will also visit a working tea factory, where you will get acquainted with all the stages of making the famous Ceylon tea, learn to distinguish its varieties and taste the drink.
On this tour, you will also visit the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya. The splendor of this garden will not leave anyone indifferent; the richest collection of tropical flowers, herbs, fancy shrubs, and trees covers an area of about 60 hectares. Walking here is a real pleasure. During it, you will see trees planted by the first cosmonaut of the world, Gagarin, Tsar Nikolai 2, and many other prominent public and political figures, giant bamboo thickets and huge focuses of Benjamin, a collection of orchids and hibiscus, Seychelles palms, and many other representatives of tropical flora.
Finish the sightseeing day at the main temple of the island, Sri Dalada Maligawa – the temple where the sacred relics are kept – the Tooth of the Buddha.
The tour is suitable for lovers of nature, animals and hiking active walks, and people interested in culture and religion.
