Overview

Kandy, often referred to as the “Hill Capital” of Sri Lanka, is a city nestled amidst lush green hills in the heart of the island. This charming city is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, serene landscapes, and historical significance. The focal point of Kandy is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which houses a sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha. This temple is a place of great reverence for Buddhists and a symbol of Sri Lanka’s cultural identity.

Matale is a charming town located not far from Kandy and serves as a gateway to explore the Central Province’s natural beauty. The area is known for its lush landscapes, pristine rivers, and an abundance of spice gardens, making it a hub for spice cultivation in Sri Lanka.

Pinnawala, located not far from Kandy, is famous for its elephant orphanage. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a sanctuary that cares for and rehabilitates injured or orphaned elephants, and it offers a chance for visitors to observe these majestic creatures up close.

A visit to Pinnawala provides the opportunity to witness elephants being bathed in the river, a daily ritual that is both entertaining and heartwarming. The sanctuary’s mission is to protect and preserve Sri Lanka’s elephant population, making it a unique and educational experience for animal lovers.

The Knuckles Mountain Range, also known as the Knuckles Massif, is a rugged and pristine mountain range situated in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. The name “Knuckles” derives from the range’s resemblance to a set of knuckles in a clenched fist.

This mountain range is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and hikers, offering a variety of trekking routes that provide breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, dense forests, waterfalls, and unique biodiversity. The Knuckles Mountain Range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a protected conservation area, ensuring the preservation of its ecological and cultural significance.

To be in Sri Lanka and not see the production of real, world-famous Ceylon tea? That would be a big miss! That is why we will begin our acquaintance with the island with a visit to one of more than 1200 factories, where you will see the production process of this invigorating and beloved drink. Next, we will go to one of the most famous and visited sights of Sri Lanka and Pinnawala, the largest elephant nursery in Asia, on the way, we will visit an Ayurvedic garden where you can see with your own eyes how plants are used both in cooking and in local ancient medicine grow. You will then walk through the magnificent Royal Botanical Gardens– you will see a huge variety of tropical vegetation, walk along the avenue of palm trees, look into the greenhouse of orchids, see memorial trees planted by prominent public and political figures of the world (including Yuri Gagarin and Tsar Nicholas II), and see many other interesting things. At the end of the day, we will visit one of the main Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Sri Lanka, the Temple of the Tooth Relic.

Overnight at the hotel.

After breakfast at the hotel, we will go to the city of Matale in the central part of the island to see one of the largest Hindu temples on the island, Sri Maha Mariamman, dedicated to the mother goddess Mariamman, who gives fertility and protects against disease. Our next goal will be the Knuckles mountain range, rarely visited by tourists due to its distance from the coast, but a stunningly beautiful area of the Knuckles mountain range. At your choice, we can get great aesthetic pleasure from a walk near the wonderful mountain lake Sembuwatta, located among tea plantations, tall pines, and eucalyptus trees, or climb the ridge called River Stone to admire amazing views from an altitude of about 1500 m above sea level. We are sure that you will definitely want to come back here again.

Overnight at the hotel.

After breakfast at the hotel, another mysterious and little-known attraction of the island awaits us the Kadadora Temple. This temple was abandoned and destroyed during the construction of the dam, and now its ruins can only be seen when the water level in the reservoir is low, which makes it look like the mysterious Atlantis. Well, the program will be completed by the 48-meter Ambuluvava Tower, famous for its external spiral staircase and magnificent views for many kilometers around.
