Overview
Sigiriya, often referred to as the “Lion Rock,” is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic and historically significant landmarks. This ancient rock fortress, located in the central part of the country, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testament to the island’s rich history and architectural prowess.
The Sigiriya Rock rises dramatically from the surrounding plains, its sheer vertical walls adorned with stunning frescoes and the remnants of a grand palace at its summit. The site dates back to the 5th century and was used as a royal residence and a fortified citadel. The highlight of the climb is the Lion’s Paw Terrace, where visitors can witness the remains of two enormous lion paws that once formed the entrance to the palace.
Kandy, often referred to as the “Hill Capital” of Sri Lanka, is a city nestled amidst lush green hills in the heart of the island. This charming city is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, serene landscapes, and historical significance. The focal point of Kandy is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which houses a sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha. This temple is a place of great reverence for Buddhists and a symbol of Sri Lanka’s cultural identity.
Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as “Little England,” is a picturesque hill station in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. It is renowned for its temperate climate and scenic tea plantations, reminiscent of the English countryside. The town’s architecture and gardens exude a colonial charm, creating a unique atmosphere.
Nuwara Eliya is surrounded by rolling hills covered in tea bushes, and it’s in these plantations that some of the world’s finest Ceylon tea is cultivated. Visitors can explore the tea factories to learn about the tea-making process and enjoy tea tastings.
The climate in Nuwara Eliya is notably cooler than the rest of Sri Lanka, making it a perfect destination for those seeking respite from the tropical heat. The beautiful Victoria Park offers a serene setting for a leisurely walk, while nearby attractions like Horton Plains National Park and World’s End provide opportunities for nature hikes.
Ella is another charming hill town, known for its natural beauty and adventurous opportunities. Nestled amidst tea plantations, Ella is an excellent destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. The area is surrounded by lush green hills, and some of the most popular hikes include Ella Rock and Little Adam’s Peak, both of which offer breathtaking views of the landscape.
The Nine Arch Bridge is an architectural marvel and a popular spot for tourists. Visitors can watch trains passing through the bridge while enjoying the lush greenery surrounding it, making it an excellent spot for photography.
The basic program includes a climb to the Pidurangala rock. If you wish, you can climb Sigiriya instead of Pidurangala by paying the difference in ticket prices ($25 per adult and $10 per child 5–11 years old). Then we will go to Kandy, but on the way to the city of Dambulla, we will visit the modern temple of the golden Buddha, decorated with a 30-meter statue. In addition, we will visit the city of Matala, where you will see one of the largest Hindu temples on the island, Sri Maha Mari Amman, dedicated to the mother goddess Mari Amman, who gives fertility and protects against disease. overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, we will visit one of the most revered places of pilgrimage for Buddhists from all over the world: the Sri Dalada Maligawa Temple, the place where the sacred Tooth of the Buddha is kept. Then we will go to the tea capital of the island - the highland city of Nuwara Eliya. The city was founded in the 19th century by British colonists and has preserved the charming architecture of that time. The hallmark of Nuwara Eliya is the building of the island's oldest post office, which, although built in 1894, still serves as a post office. We also have a pleasant walk through one of the highest botanical gardens in the world (1750 meters above sea level) - Hakgala. The garden contains an extensive collection of flowers, giant ferns, roses, and orchids. overnight at the hotel.
On the final excursion day, we will go to one of the most popular high-mountain resorts on the island, Ella. Ella is known for many attractions, of which we have selected the most interesting and visited by travelers from all over the world. You will see the Ravana Falls, shrouded in ancient legend, a hundred-year-old nine-arch bridge built by British colonists, and also climb the small Adam's Peak, from the height of which magnificent views of the green mountain ranges open. The excursion is suitable for lovers of nature, animals, and outdoor walks who are interested in culture, archeology, and religion.
